3 Frameworks for Generating Creative Solutions

3 Frameworks for Generating Creative Solutions

Product design requires creativity and execution. Execution comes from experience and learning from mistakes.

Believe it or not, creativity can be developed on demand.

If you're a founder brainstorming features, a product owner planning your roadmap, or a designer exploring solutions, these three frameworks help you generate ideas systematically. We use these methods daily at Chayland Design to turn concepts into products users want.

1. Mind Mapping for Product Ideation

Mind mapping sketches a map of your ideas around a product. Place your core concept at the center, then let ideas branch out into features and functionalities.

Example:

You're brainstorming an online shopping app. Place "Online Shopping App" at the center. Let ideas branch out: virtual try-on, AI personal shopper, social sharing, saved carts, comparison tools.

Mind mapping helps you conceptualize ideas you wouldn't have thought of by listing features linearly. Once you have ideas mapped out, deciding which to build first requires a prioritization framework.

Tools: Pen and Paper, FigJam, Connect Claude to FigJam, Lucidchart

2. SCAMPER Framework for Product Innovation

SCAMPER stands for Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, Put to another use, Eliminate, and Reverse. Each letter guides refining an existing concept.

This framework encourages you to deconstruct the ordinary and push boundaries to conceive innovative features.

Example for a fitness app:

S (Substitute): Replace generic workout plans with AI-driven personalized routines.

C (Combine): Mix fitness tracking with social elements so users can share progress with friends.

A (Adapt): Borrow ideas from popular games to make fitness challenges more engaging.

M (Modify): Revamp the interface to make it more user-friendly and visually appealing.

P (Put to another use): Use the app's data in meal planning, not just workouts.

E (Eliminate): Remove features that generate confusion for a cleaner, more focused app.

R (Reverse): Instead of the app suggesting workouts, users set goals and the app adapts its suggestions accordingly.

After exploring variations with SCAMPER, validate which features users will actually adopt before committing to development.

3. Design Thinking Process

Design Thinking centers on empathy. It's about understanding your users' needs and wants through brainstorming, prototyping, and testing.

Put yourself in the user's shoes. Envision what could simplify their life or add enjoyment. This empathy-driven approach is central to how product designers work.

Reflective Practice:

Create a "day in the life" story for your typical user.

What do they do when they wake up?

What problems do they face?

What frustrates them when they try to perform an action in your app?

What do they genuinely enjoy?

Additional Ways to Ideate

Study app store reviews and ratings of similar apps to gain insights into user feedback, pain points, and areas for improvement. This helps identify common issues and prioritize features that address user concerns.

Explore emerging technologies, innovations and stay informed about advancements like AI, AR, or voice interfaces that provide new design opportunities.

Investigate different monetization models: in-app purchases, subscriptions, advertising. Assess the suitability of these models for your app and the potential revenue streams they offer.

Creativity in product design can be systematic. Use these frameworks to explore ideas, refine concepts, and build features users actually want.
